Marlins owner Bruce Sherman cited O’Connor’s “tireless work ethic and command of the issues surrounding the business operations of a Major League Baseball franchise” as the impetus for her ascension from chief of staff, to COO, to president over her six-year tenure with the club. Her rise is part of a growing trend across the league of women joining the C-suite at the club level. O’Connor, a 2023 Sports Business Journal Game Changer honoree who was promoted from chief operating officer to her new role by the Marlins in November, is one of only two women leading business operations across MLB’s 30 clubs, the other being Seattle’s Catie Griggs. ![]() Put another way, Oxfeld said, “We need a face, and she’s exactly that for us.” She is, in Fernandez’s words, “doing so much to build the Marlins brand already.” Or she could be at a Miami Hurricanes postseason baseball game, in the crowd with her husband and two sons because “she understands the importance of not just being the speaker in front of the 1,000-member Chamber of Commerce, but also the importance of participating and attending events to support others,” said Rudy Fernandez, executive vice president for university operations and external affairs and chief of staff at the University of Miami, who ran into O’Connor at such a game in June.
